Hiking in Madeira is one of the most popular activity to do on the island. In this blog I am sharing my top 3 most beautiful Madeira walks that I took while I spent my holidays there.
Hiking in Madeira
The are plenty of options for hiking in Madeira. Popular are the so called Madeira levada walks that follow a water channel or aqueduct so typical in this region of the Atlantic. There are also plenty of other walks that you can take depending on your level of hiking, depending on how long you wish to hike and ranging from easy to difficult.
Top 3 most beautiful Madeira walks
Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco hike
On the very first day I went on a hike in Machico, on the east side of the Island. I took the Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco trail. It is a 3 hours walk (round trip – I walked quite slow and stopped many times to take pictures) that takes you through different kind of landscapes. From cliffs to more arid landscape with almost no trees and that are unique to this part of the Island. This trail was my favorite trail.
Pico de Arieiro hike
My second favorite trail in Madeira was Pico de Arieiro. I am not sure what was nicer the way up there, driving through the clouds or hiking there and having the feeling to walk above the clouds. The hike can be pretty long but you can decide to only go to Eira de Serrado like we did. From there you have a view over Curral de Freiras a village in the mountains. Absolutely beautiful!
Levada do Risco & Levada das 25 fontes hike
Hiking in Madeira means to take at least one of the levada walks. We went for hiking at Levada do Risco that took us to an impressive waterfall before going down to Levada das 25 fontes where you can admire a spring lagoon. More than the lagoon itself, I was impressed by the way going there through the laurel forest. This is Madeira’s most famous walks!
This are to me the most beautiful walks in Madeira but obviously there are plenty more. Don’t miss my article about the things to do in Madeira for more informations about that pretty island!
